Generic

  • Download the ISE 14.7 webpack (not Vivado)  from Xilinx download page. You will need to download all four files (about 10Gbytes so find a big disk). You will probably need to register.
  • You will need an additional ~21 GBytes for the installation (by default in /opt/Xilinx so check it has enough space).

    > df -mh /opt/
  • Unpack the tar file (file 1 of 4).

    > cd ~/Downloads
    > tar -xvf Xilinx_ISE_DS_Lin_14.7_1015_1.tar
  • run ./xsetup file
> cd ~/Downloads/Xilinx_ISE_DS_Lin_14.7_1015_1
> sudo ./xsetup
  • Select "install cable drivers" and "ISE webpack". The cable driver installation will fail on Fedora at the end; if that happens follow the next section.
  • You will need a free license key. Either request one from Xilinx or ask me. When asked for key management, select "copy file" and select "Xilinx.lic". After installation, you should see a list of active products.
  • When everything is working, delete the download files.

Fedora 17 and 20

The cable driver installation will fail on Fedora 17 and 20.

  • Follow these instructions : Xilinx JTAG linux (written for Ubuntu but works on Fedora). Short version:

    > sudo yum install gitk git-gui libusb-devel fxload # last two may already exist
    > cd /opt/Xilinx
    > sudo git clone git://git.zerfleddert.de/usb-driver
    > cd usb-driver
    > sudo make
    > sudo ./setup_pcusb /opt/Xilinx/14.7/ISE_DS/ISE/
  • Reboot.

Running ISE

Adding the Xilinx ISE to your PATH seems to cause conflicts so do not do it by default but only when you need to upload the firmware.

Either
> PATH=$PATH:/opt/Xilinx/14.7/ISE_DS/ISE/bin/lin64 ; export PATH
or
> source /opt/Xilinx/14.7/ISE_DS/settings64.sh

> /opt/Xilinx/14.7/ISE_DS/ISE/bin/lin64/impact &

Uploading Firmware

See Uploading USBDAQ Firmware for how to upload the firmware.
